What You Need To Know About Meta External Link Limits (And How to Work Around It For Free)

Have you recently tried adding a website link in your Facebook post or Instagram comment, only to get an error message that you’ve reached the maximum number of links allowed for the month? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one.
Earlier this year, Meta introduced a series of single-product subscription plans to enhance your experience on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. These plans offered benefits like extended story durations, custom fonts, deeper audience insights, and Meta has continued to add benefits over the past few months.
On September 15, Meta introduced its new Meta One subscription plan. Meta One combines the benefits of Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus with expanded AI capabilities. Along with these new AI capabilities and feature tiers came a major restriction that caught a lot of small business owners off guard: strict limits on organic external links.
For years, sharing blog posts, product pages, and booking links in regular posts was a primary way small businesses drove traffic from social media to their websites. Now, that strategy has abruptly hit a paywall.
Here’s what’s actually changed after the September 15th rollout, what it means for your business, and how you can continue driving website traffic for free without paying for a Meta One subscription.
New Meta One Organic Link Limits Explained
If your business is not paying for at least a Meta One Advanced plan ($49.99/month), Meta now caps your account at two external links per month across your organic content. This means you can only share two non-Meta-affiliated links across all of your posts, reels, and comments each month.
Once you hit the two-link limit, any additional external URLs you try to share will either fail to publish or throw an administrative error.
What Is Exempt From Link Limits?
Fortunately, not every link counts towards your monthly total. If the link you are sharing points to a Meta-owned platform (such as your Threads profile, WhatsApp channel, or Instagram account), then it does not count toward your two-link allowance.
You can still add link stickers to both your Facebook and Instagram stories with no deduction, though you are limited to one sticker per story.
Additionally, your paid content is unaffected by the new restrictions. Unpaid users still have the ability to add external links to their ad campaigns and boosted posts.
Meta One Pricing: Is Upgrading Worth It for Small Businesses?
Meta introduced Meta One to consolidate individual plans like Instagram Plus alongside expanded AI capabilities like Muse image/video generation. While creator plans start at lower price points, business features like link allowances and Meta Business Agent is locked behind higher tiers.
Subscription Tier | Price | Key Features |
Meta One Core | Starting at $7.99/month | Facebook Plus Instagram Plus WhatsApp Plus Expanded Muse AI image generation Text-to-video generation No additional post links |
Meta One Premium | Starting at $19.99/month | Facebook Plus Instagram Plus WhatsApp Plus Increased Muse AI generation credits No additional post links |
Meta One Essential | Starting at $14.99/month | Verified badge Impersonation protection Shareable link page (up to 20 profile links) Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp No additional post links |
Meta One Advanced | Starting at $49.99/month | Meta One Essential benefits Advanced insights More Meta Business Agent responses Add links to 4 posts & 4 reels per month |
Meta One Expert | Starting at $149.00/month | Meta One Advanced benefits Profile comparisons Grant access to 8 users Maximum Meta Business Agent responses Add links to 8 posts & 8 reels per month |
Meta One Max | Starting at $499.00/month | Meta One Expert benefits Dedicated 24/7 account support Grant access to 30 users Add links to 12 posts & 12 reels per month |
For a small local business or grassroots marketing team, spending $50 to $500 every month to get 8-24 clickable post links may not be the most practical investment. But the good news is that you don’t need to pay for Meta One to keep directing your social media followers to your website.
3 Free Workarounds to Bypass Meta Link Limits
With direct link-sharing restricted in standard feed posts, small business owners need to pivot from “click the link below” to alternative engagement strategies. Here are three practical, free ways to keep sending followers to your website without exceeding Meta's link limit.
#1 Link Sharing on Instagram and Facebook Stories
Link stickers added to stories remain completely free and unlimited for business accounts. Instead of trying to put direct website links into your feed post captions, use the post as a visual teaser to push traffic to the link in your story.
How to add link stickers to your story:
Add your photo, video, or reel to your main feed
Write a clear call-to-action such as “Ready to book? Tap the link in our story!”
Immediately share that feed post to your story and attach a link sticker pointing to your desired URL (NOTE: there is a limit of 1 link sticker per story, but no limit on the number of stories with link stickers you can share)
Save important links to your profile Highlights so users can access those links after the 24-hour expiration.
#2 Set Up Free Comment-to-DM Automations via Meta Business Suite
Instead of manually telling users to visit your link, let Meta automatically send the link directly to their inbox when they leave a comment.
How to Set Up Custom Keyword DM Automations
Important Note: These steps must be completed on a desktop browser. The Meta Business Suite mobile app does not currently offer full custom automation controls.
Log in to Meta Business Suite on your computer.
Select “Inbox” from the left-hand menu, then click the “Automations” icon in the top right corner.
Click “Create Automation”, then select “Start From Scratch”.
Name your automation (e.g., “Fall Event Ticket Link”).
Check the box for the channel you want to use (Facebook or Instagram).
Under “Select a Condition”, choose “New Message Received”.
Specify your trigger keyword(s).
Under “Actions,” select “Send Message” and write a message containing your external URL.
Save your changes.
After saving your automation, wait a few minutes and refresh your screen to ensure the automation status shows as active.
#3 Maximize Your Bio Links
Consider using a free tool such as Linktree to add more links to your profile and direct users to the link in your bio. You can upgrade your Linktree plan to add custom branding, gain user insights, and more, but you can add unlimited basic links using a free account.
Don’t Let Platform Changes Disrupt Your Business Growth
When social platforms change the rules overnight, businesses that adapt quickly maintain their advantage, while those relying on outdated methods lose visibility. By shifting your strategy toward automated DMs, story stickers, and bio links, you can navigate Meta’s new link restrictions without adding another monthly subscription to your expense sheet.

I hit this two-link limit last week and thought my account was broken. I found the Neon Abyss 2 Wiki & Database while searching for a fix, and it actually explained the workaround pretty well.
